How To Play Piano for Beginners, Lesson 3 || Reading a Melody

This is the third piano tutorial in my “How To Play Piano for Beginners” project. In it, we begin to learn about different note lengths, how bars (measures) work, and what we mean as musicians when we talk about beat and time signature. By the end we’re playing simple right hand melodies on your piano: being able to read melodies from music, and then phrase and shape them well on the piano keyboard is an essential skill for all pianists. Practising how to do it well is essential.

Also make sure that you’ve really grasped the stuff we covered in the first two lessons in the series — in particular you need to have the note names at your fingertips (as it were), and be able find middle C on the piano without really thinking about it. From now on I’m going to take it for granted you can do those things, so if you’re still a bit wobbly, prioritize them in your piano practice! As usual, there’s a downloadable PDF with reminders and exercises that accompanies this tutorial (link below).
